Author(s): Christian Chaize
Photographer Christian Chaize shot Praia Piquina, a beautiful and intimate beach in the south of Portugal, from the same vantage point many times over the course of 8 years. This book compiles the resulting photographs in a charming portrait not just of that small patch of sand, but the people, families, tourists, travellers, lovers, tides, light and weather that shape and reshape its landscape each day. A selection of close-up details invigorate the book and showcase the charming differences that emerge when the same scene is shot repeatedly. With its colourful beach umbrellas and dreamy blue horizons, this beautiful book is a breath of fresh air and the next-best thing to Mediterranean travel.
Christian Chaize is a self-taught French artist. For the past 20 years, he has had a successful career as a commercial photographer. In 1992, he was awarded the Prix European Panorama de Kodak for Young European Photographer in Arles, France. In 2004, Chaize became obsessed with a small stretch of coastline in southern Portugal, which gave new life to his ongoing personal work. Since then, his commitment to the series Praia Piquinia (where he now photographs several times a year) has garnered Chaize two museum shows in Portugal (Sines and Lisbon), in addition to gallery representation and exhibitions in New York and Berlin.
