Hannie Rayson - writer, mother, daughter, sister, wife, romantic, adventuress, parking-spot optimist - has spent a lifetime giving voice to others in the many roles she has written for stage and television. In her new book, she shines the spotlight on herself.

This collection of stories from a dramatic life radiate with the great warmth and humour that has made Hannie one of the best-known playwrights in the country. From a childhood in Brighton to a urinary tract infection in Spain, from a body buried under the house to a play on a tram, Hello, Beautiful! Scenes from a Life captures a life behind the scenes - a life of tender moments, hilarious encounters and, inevitably, drama.

Stephen Pastis - Timmy Failure: We Meet Again

Avenue Bookstore Albert Park

And yet the gods are throwing him curve balls: for starters, he's on a trial period in school and to keep his place he has to get good grades and really behave. The fabled Miracle report will be the key to his success. It's a dirty business. It's best you know nothing. But one thing is for sure - Timmy Failure will be triumphant again!

Geoffrey Blainey - The Story of Australia's People: The Rise and Fall of Ancient Australia, Volume 1

Albert Park Primary School

Compelling, groundbreaking and brilliantly readable, The Story of Australia's People: The Rise and Fall of Ancient Australia is the first instalment of an ambitious two-part work, and the culmination of the lifework of Australia's most prolific and wide-ranging historian. The vast continent of Australia was settled in two main streams, far apart in time and origin.

The first came ashore some 50,000 years ago when the islands of Australia, Tasmania and New Guinea were one. The second began to arrive from Europe at the end of the eighteenth century. Each had to come to terms with the land they found, and each had to make sense of the other.

David Day - Paul Keating: The Biography

Avenue Bookstore
Wednesday 25th February

In the tradition of his bestselling Curtin and Chifley, David Day has written the definitive biography of one of our most enigmatic prime ministers. Paul Keating was one of the most significant political figures of the late twentieth century, firstly as Treasurer for eight years and then Prime Minister for five years.

Although he has spent all of his adult life in the public eye, Keating has eschewed the idea of publishing his memoirs and has discouraged biographers from writing about his life. Undaunted, best-selling biographer David Day has taken on the task of giving Keating the biography that he deserves.

Joanne Fedler - Love In the Time of Contempt

Avenue Bookstore Elsternwick
Monday 23rd February

When it comes to teenagers, truth is way scarier than fiction!

Joanne Fedler draws upon her own experience as the parent of two teenagers, as well as interviews with other parents in the same boat to explore some of the numerous issues that one confronts during these tricky years.

In Love in the Time of Contempt, she skilfully guides us through the myriad of issues that come before you - from their changing, developing bodies, drinking and drugs, sex, friendships, appearance, relationships within the family, attitudes and ethics, schooling and authority and more. In her exploration of these issues and how they may manifest in our children, Joanne highlights how so much of our dealings with our teenagers is really about dealing with ourselves and being honest about our reactions. In turn we too examine our own values and behaviours to understand our lives together.
