They Cannot Take the Sky
They Cannot Take The Sky is an oral history project documenting the stories of men, women and children who have experienced Australian mandatory detention over the past 23 years. It seeks to bring a new perspective to the public understanding of mandatory detention by sharing the reality of the people who have lived it...Through in depth interviews with current and ex-detainees, it captures narrators' histories, experiences of seeking protection in Australia and the detailed reality of mandatory detention...Working with narrators, these interviews are then edited into first person narratives that take the form of literary short stories.
BEHIND THE WIRE is a new organisation committed to social justice for refugees and is continuing to grow and flourish since launching only a few months ago. BEHIND THE WIRE has already engaged in a number of interesting collaborations and they are currently working with the Melbourne Writers' Festival and Yarra Trams as part of their 17 minutes project. BEHIND THE WIRE has a range of highly committed supporters including Julian Burnside, who is the BEHIND THE WIRE ambassador, and Dave Eggers, who founded their partner organisation VOICE OF WITNESS. Both have shown their support for the book project...The BEHIND THE WIRE organisation has also worked on other projects with Michael Kirby, Christos Tsiolkas, Anna Funder, Tony Birch, Robin de Crespigny, Shaun Tan, Alice Pung and Maxine Beneba-Clarke, all of whom they believe would be enthusiastic about helping to spread word and support of the Behind the Wire book...
