At 26, Mary Ellen Jordan left Melbourne's inner city to spend a year working in Maningrida, a coastal Aboriginal community in Arnhem Land. She made the journey expecting to work side by side with the indigenous community, thinking she would be of some use. But nothing, it turned out, would be that simple.
