Meredith Mitchell is none too happy to be back in Britain. Life as the British Consul of Yugoslavia was far more fun. Still, she's got the delightful opportunity to live in Oxfordshire, instead of London, and what's more, she's in the vicinity of Chief Inspector Alan Markby. When Meredith is invited to the Boxing Day Hunt, curiosity stirs her to attend. However, tragedy spoils the event. It looks like an accident, but some witnesses cry murder. If they're right, Meredith and Alan have a sneaking suspicion the obvious candidate for the murderer is, in fact, an obvious scapegoat.
