BIRDS BEAST AND FLOWERS POEMS

Author(s): LAWRENCE D.H.

Poetry

This is a faithful reproduction of Lawrence's first great experiment in free verse. It includes lines previously censored for being "indecent", as well as following Lawrence's original sequence. D.H. Lawrence (1885-1930) made a contribution to poetry that, in the words of Louis Bogan, "Can now be recognized as one of the most important, in any language, of our time." "Birds, Beasts, and Flowers!" was his first great experiment into the form of free verse. This edition re-sets the text in the format of the first edition, whilst also restoring some lines that were previously censored for being "indecent." Many of the individual poems featured in this volume are popular in anthologies, but they are best read in the context of the whole book as Lawrence grouped the poems in a purposeful sequence - which this edition faithfully reproduces.

Product Information

"Birds, Beasts and Flowers is the peak of Lawrence's achievement as a poet...Like the romantics [his] starting point in these poems is a personal encounter between himself and some animal or flower, but, unlike the romantics, he never confuses the feelings they arouse in him with what he sees and hears and knows about them."
