Author(s): Matt Irwin
Twenty five years since he took his first shot, photographer Matt Irwin still remembers riding his bike around Melbourne as a seventeen year old, camera slung over his shoulder. “I have a massive love for cinema so you could say I’ve got a cinematic eye, but Melbourne was showing off in front of me and I was like, man that’s cool!” says Irwin.
A culmination of his photographic career to date, Irwin’s latest project is a book, aptly titled ‘Melbourne: A Love Affair’ and features images spanning from 1989 to 2012, or as Irwin puts it, a generation. “When I started I thought Melbourne was so beautiful and no one else was shooting it like that. The title of the book is the most honest thing I can say about what’s driven me to shoot this beautiful city for so long.”
